Background of the Study
Social media platforms have become integral to everyday communication, influencing the structure and evolution of language. In Nigeria, Twitter serves as a dynamic arena where morphosyntactic features of language are rapidly evolving. This study examines the impact of social media communication on Nigerian morphosyntax, with a focus on Twitter trends. The brevity imposed by character limits and the informal nature of digital communication encourage the use of innovative syntactic constructions and morphological abbreviations (Chukwu, 2023). Users often resort to creative word formations, non-standard grammatical structures, and code-switching to convey messages efficiently and engagingly. This research investigates these morphosyntactic changes by analyzing tweets, hashtags, and user interactions to identify emerging patterns. The study also considers how these changes reflect broader socio-cultural dynamics and the influence of globalization on language practices in Nigeria (Nnadi, 2024). By tracing these linguistic trends, the research aims to contribute to our understanding of language adaptation in digital environments and its implications for formal language use (Ike, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Although social media is reshaping language use in Nigeria, there is limited research on how these platforms affect morphosyntax specifically. Most studies have focused on lexical innovations without adequately addressing the structural changes in morphology and syntax resulting from Twitter communication (Ugo, 2023). This gap limits our understanding of how digital constraints and informal discourse shape language evolution. Consequently, educators and language planners may be ill-equipped to address these changes in formal settings. This study seeks to fill this gap by providing a systematic analysis of morphosyntactic variations in Twitter trends and assessing their broader implications for Nigerian language practices (Ike, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify morphosyntactic changes in Nigerian Twitter discourse.
  2. To analyze the influence of digital communication constraints on language structure.
  3. To evaluate the implications of these changes for formal language use.

Research Questions

  1. What morphosyntactic patterns emerge in Nigerian Twitter trends?
  2. How does digital communication influence these patterns?
  3. What are the implications for standard language practices?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it elucidates the impact of social media on Nigerian morphosyntax, bridging the gap between informal digital discourse and formal language use. The findings will benefit linguists, educators, and policymakers by providing insights into the evolving nature of language in the digital age (Chukwu, 2023; Ike, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing morphosyntactic features in Nigerian Twitter trends.

Definitions of Terms

  • Morphosyntax: The study of the interaction between word formation and sentence structure.
  • Social Media Communication: Informal language use on digital platforms, particularly Twitter.
  • Twitter Trends: Popular topics and linguistic patterns emerging on Twitter.
